What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

PIN codes

A PIN code is a collection of numbers (usually six or four digits) that can be used to gain access to the device, system, or service. For instance, a smart phone has a code that the user enters when they first buy the device. The user must enter this code every time they want to use it. PIN codes are also commonly used to safeguard ATM or transactions at POS,[1 secure access control (doors, computers, cars),[2] computer systems,[3] and internet transactions.

Although a longer PIN might seem more secure than a smaller one, it is possible to hack or guess a four-digit PIN. To ensure greater security, it is recommended that PINs are at least 6 digits in length, and include both numbers and letters. The first digit is given an 8 and each subsequent digit increases in value by one until the seventh digit is nine, which is then two. Then the entire VIN will be translated back to its original form by multiplying each weight by 11. If the result is identical to the check digit then the VIN is valid.
